OCEAN CHALLENGE 2018
SUPPORTING WOUNDED VETERANS ANNOUNCE PLANS TO HOST THEIR
FIRST ‘OCEAN CHALLENGE’ EVENT IN JULY 2018
SUPPORTING WOUNDED VETERANS’ mission is to help medically discharged wounded veterans back into meaningful civilian life and employment. The key
programs include ‘skihabilitation’, mentoring, pain management in conjunction with King Edward VII’s Hospital, London, occupational training and providing a
family support network.
On the back of hosting its annual ‘Skihabilitation’ events, the charity is hosting for the first time ever an OCEAN CHALLENGE event. This event will be a fun, demanding, adrenaline fuelled and competitive sailing event consisting of 5 days of intensive training and 1 day of racing with the fleet participating in the Island Sailing Club’s ‘Round The Island Race’ on Saturday 7th July 2018, along with 1500 other competing yachts racing around the Isle of Wight. The Ocean Challenge will ensure that able bodied and disabled sailors compete on equal terms, after their intensive training.
Gilly Norton, Executive Director of Supporting Wounded Veterans, commented today on this event news:
“After the enormous continued success of Skiing with Heroes, the Ski Week and Business Challenge, we are very pleased to expand our programme with The Ocean Challenge. We are bringing together a group of medically discharged international veterans who have fought together and will use this experience to live, sail and heal together, which will be thrilling and hugely beneficial event.”
A quote from a Veteran in 2017 after the Skiing with Heroes Week:
“The mix-team of mentors and vets was perfect to build resilience, coping tools, exposures, commitment, support and amazing new friendships. I was dazzled by the energy of these people to help each other.”
The event is supported by team sponsors Sunsail and Coin Street Partners.
Sunsail, Port Solent, is the main event training and charter boat partner. The teams will live, train and race onboard Sunsail Match First 40 yachts, based initially out of the Sunsail base in Port Solent, with the crews being tested in Solent waters during the week, and then moving across to Cowes Yacht Haven on the Friday before the big race day.
Simon Boulding, Sunsail Events Director commented:
“Sailing is a fantastic team-building activity and so when we were asked to help Supporting Wounded Veterans launch this exciting project we were absolutely delighted. The Round the Island Race is an iconic event and will challenge and reward the veterans and their fellow crew mates. Sunsail looks forward to partnering Supporting Wounded Veterans in this initiative.”
The charity is delighted to have Coinstreet Partners as a boat sponsor and the title sponsor for the Ocean Challenge Gala Dinner taking place after the race in Cowes.
